In The New Pet, Ester and the girls bring an injured butterfly fish back to the Starfish Palace to recuperate. As the girls fuss and argue over the butterfly fish, Spikey begins to feel neglected. He seemingly lets the butterfly fish be swept away in the storm, but when he is found again, he is upset over the girls arguing about him, which leads them to surmise that he ran away because of it.
In The Healer, Ester discovers that Spikey knows Duante, a mysterious boy who can understand every creature and can seemingly appear and disappear at any time. Frustrated at being unable to make him stay around, Ester uses Spikey to lure Duante out, much to his disapproval. Spikey's disgust at this trick makes him leave Ester to be with Duante, but he does not allow Spikey to come with him as he knows that Ester needs him too much. He does, however, reveal his name to Ester and Spikey as he leaves.
